The Poncho Pack - Packaging Design

The Poncho Pack - Branding and Packaging
Tools used: Illustrator and InDesign
Created by Destin Hinton
This is a project from my design and layout class. The goal was to reverse engineer and redesign the packaging of a box we found for a new product. We had to create the company name and logo for the new product.

The requirements were: The redesign couldn't be from the same industry as the original packaging. The packaging also had to include any labels, warnings, etc. required for the product you choose.
Find A Box
I decided to use one my old headphone boxes to redesign for this project. I deconstruct the box at it seams and scanned it.
Pick a New Product
I brainstormed for a little while and chose ponchos. I thought it would be cool if the box held ponchos and from the bottom of the box the ponchos could be dispensed out like a tissue box. Also, since the box had a hang tab it could be hung where you needed it, a closet, garage, car, etc.
Product Research & Logo
At this point, I brainstormed some ideas for the name and logo of the company.
I wanted something catchy, simple, and easy to say. I decided to go with "The Poncho Pack" because it had a nice flow to it and gave me the most ideas for the logo. I then did some product research for the company. Figuring out what made the product special, who was the target audience, and what did the competition look like. This helped me fuel ideas and make educated decisions on the design the packaging.

After doing some research I created a mood board for the packaging. Collecting ideas for the color palette, patterns and fonts to be used for the packaging. For the final logo, I want to represent the words "Poncho" and "Pack" somehow. So, I decided to create a group of characters wearing ponchos and sitting in the rain, kind of like ninjas. I thought it was a fun idea. I also want the shape of the characters to match the diamond shape they are sitting in so created their hoods in a diamond shape as well. This created a geometric vibe I wanted to continue in the packaging design. I then did a rough sketch of the packaging marking where everything was going to go.
Recreating the Dieline and Final Sketch
Next, I recreated the scanned dieline of the original box in Illustrator. Including all the needed marks: Bleed, trimline, fold line, safe zone, and glue. I then printed the dieline and created the final sketch.
Final Design
I created the artwork in Illustrator and then added the type InDesign.
